Onsite Testing Q & A

One of the best ways for a cardiologist to determine whether your heart has an issue is to perform a series of tests to measure your:

  • Heart rate (monitor) and rhythms
  • Blood flow
  • Electrical activity

Your heart is solely responsible for delivering oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood throughout your body. If there’s any interruption in this all-important endeavor, Dr. Peterson needs to find out where the breakdown is occurring so he can work to solve it.

When it comes to your heart, expediency is key. By offering onsite testing, Dr. Peterson can save you valuable time when it comes to your heart health. Instead of going from testing site to testing site, Dr. Peterson can perform everything necessary from his center.

Eastern Shore Heart Center offers the following onsite testing:

Treadmill Stress Tests

This is a straightforward test where you walk or run on a treadmill while you’re hooked up to EKG, allowing Dr. Peterson to monitor your heart while it works. We measure how far you walk to see if you develop chest pains, while ECG tells us whether your heart is getting sufficient blood.

Nuclear Stress Testing

This test measures blood flow to your heart while you’re at rest. The nuclear test provides images of areas of low blood flow. We determine whether your heart is working harder with exertion or medication. The test images areas of low blood flow through the heart to determine damage to the heart muscle.

Echocardiogram

This exam creates a picture of your heart using 2D, 3D, or Doppler ultrasound. This is essentially an ultrasound or sonogram of the heart. An echocardiogram uses two-dimensional, three-dimensional and Doppler ultrasound to image the heart.

Carry-Along Event Recorder, Heart Rate Monitor

These are portable recording devices that monitor your heart rate and rhythms throughout the day. Think of it as a mobile electrocardiogram (ECG) recording when the patient has fast or slow heartbeats or feels dizzy like they are about to faint. We also use it to see how patients respond to various medications.

Ambulatory Electrocardiographic Monitoring (or Holter Monitoring)

This portable device measures your heart’s electrical activity as you go about your daily routine.
The ambulatory test procedure allows you to walk and perform other daily activities during the test. Also called ambulatory EKG, 24-hour EKG, cardiac event monitoring or Holter monitoring.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening

This is a painless procedure that provides Dr. Peterson with an ultrasound of your abdominal aorta, which is often the site of abdominal aortic aneurysm or AAA. Armed with these tools, Dr. Peterson leaves no stone unturned when it comes to diagnosing and monitoring your heart problem.

In addition to the testing and imaging equipment mentioned, Dr. Peterson relies heavily on bloodwork for screening and diagnosing heart problems. Analyzing your blood gives him valuable information about your:

  • Cholesterol levels
  • Glucose levels
  • C-reactive protein levels, which indicate inflammation

Of course, the tried-and-true blood pressure check also plays an important role and is often the first test Dr. Peterson performs when you come in. Dr. Peterson conducts all heart test procedures right in the office while you are here and comfortable.
