Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is actually a cluster of medical conditions such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol, which are associated with higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. It is estimated that 25% of American adults have metabolic syndrome. Although metabolic syndrome cannot be cured, it can be treated and mitigated with lifestyle changes such as exercise, quitting smoking, losing weight and eating a healthier diet.

Metabolic Syndrome Q & A

Metabolic syndrome is most often associated with being obese or overweight, having insulin resistance, a sign of type 2 diabetes, and a sedentary (low activity) lifestyle.
The main risk factors are:

  • Blood pressure greater than 130/85
  • High blood sugar
  • Excess belly fat
  • High triglyceride levels
  • Low HDL (good cholesterol) levels
By changing your diet and exercise habits, you can prevent, control and even reverse metabolic syndrome. Without these lifestyle changes, you could end up with significant health problems such as diabetes, heart disease or stroke.
